Here is a simple 2 step process for being a Christian that answers two basic questions:
- How do I become a Christian?
- What can I do to live a Christian life?
Well, I’m glad that you asked! Just follow this simple two step process.
1. “believe on the Lord Jesus and you will be saved.”
2. “take up [your] cross and follow [Jesus].”
Now isn’t that simple? Now we must ask the questions: what does it mean to believe “on” the Lord Jesus and what does it mean to “take up your cross” and follow Jesus?
I fear that the desire to organize discipleship into an instruction manual has reduced the faith to series of chronological items that can be checked off. Can we, however, believe on Jesus and never cultivate and deepen that believe? Can we, however, pick up our cross one time and not deal with the moment by moment decision to put it down? What happens to those who are presented with a step-by-step process for living the Christian life? I fear that they are begging for the next step without a step being available.
A step is 2 dimensional whereas the spirit of these scriptures is 3 dimensional. To be “born again/from above” is not something to check off of our list.
